Biography:

Livingston, Henry Brockholst (1757-1823: ANBO)

pseudonym Aquiline NIMBLE-CHOPS

The Supreme Court Justice Brockholst Livingston was born Henry Brockholst Livingston in New York, the son of Susanna (French) and William Livingston; as an adult, he chose to use his middle name to distinguish himself from several cousins who were also Henry. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1774, served as an officer in the Revolutionary War, and accompanied his brother-in-law John Jay on a diplomatic mission to Spain in 1779. He was called to the bar in New York in 1783, was much engaged in politics, and killed a man in a duel in New Jersey. The first canto of Democracy aroused such hostility that the second could not be published. All his other publications have to do with politics or law. He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1806 and died in Washington DC. Livingston married three times (Catherine Keteltas, Ann Ludlow, and Catherine Kortright) and had eleven children.
