Biography:
LIVINGSTON, Ann Hume (1763-1841: Hollis)
The daughter of a prominent Philadelphia doctor, William Shippen III, and his wife Alice (Lee) Shippen, she was obliged to give up a favoured suitor, a French diplomat, to marry Col. Henry Beekman Livingston in 1781. Though he was wealthy and had a distinguished record in the Revolutionary War, he proved an abusive husband. "Nancy," as she was known, returned with their baby daughter to her parents' house and attempted to secure a divorce but was unsuccessful until 1791, when Livingston divorced her. He later had three illegitimate children but when he died in 1831, their daughter Margaret petitioned for and was awarded his pension. Besides Sacred Records, Ann Livingston is known now for a book published in 1935, consisting of her diary and correspondence: Nancy Shippen Her Journal Book (Encyclopedia of Women in American History [2015] 186; Dictionary of Literary Biography [1978]; revwarny.com 18 Nov. 2019) HJ
