Author: Limrick, John Sullivan

Biography:

LIMRICK, John Sullivan (1792/3-1829: Limrick Chronology)

There are variant spellings of his surname: Limricke, Limerick. He was born in India in 1792 or 1793, the fourth child and second son of Rev. Paul Limrick D.D., and his wife, Margaret Lawe, who had married in Dublin in 1782. His father was appointed Chaplain in the EIC and left for Bengal in 1787. He held various chaplaincies and at the time of his death was Bishop designate for Calcutta. He was lost at sea aboard the Calcutta, 14 March 1809, just off Mauritius. After his death his widow and children returned to Cork. John Sullivan was probably already in Ireland at the time of his father’s death being prepared for college by the Rev. Giles Lee, at Cork, and entered Trinity College Dublin, March 5, 1810. It is unclear if he took a degree but by January 1817 he was in London where he was admitted to Lincoln’s Inn. He published Ourawns (1819) with Volume I printed on the title page but no further volumes appeared, perhaps because it consisted of only two long poems, one to James Hogg and the other on La Belle Alliance, which were unlikely to attract much attention. He does not appear to have married. He died at his residence in Russell Street, Westminster, aged 35, and was buried 28 January 1829 at St. Paul’s, Covent Garden. (ancestry.co.uk 14 Nov. 2021; findmypast.co.uk 14 Nov. 2021; Alumni Dubliensis [1924], 502; Lincoln’s Inn Admission Register, 1800-1893 [1896] 2: 70; Cork Constitution 5 Feb. 1829; H.
