LIDDELL, Henry (1797-1878: ODNB)

Born at Ravensworth Castle, Lamesley (Tyne and Wear), Henry Thomas Liddell was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Henry Liddell (6th Baronet; created Baron Ravensworth in 1821) and his wife, Maria Susannah (Simpson). He was educated at Eton and St John’s College, Cambridge, although he did not graduate. In 1820 he married Isabella Horatia Seymour. Politically he was a tory and he was elected for Northumberland in the general election of 1826. In 1855 he succeeded to the peerage and sat for Liverpool. He voted for Catholic Emancipation but opposed parliamentary reform. In 1874 he was created Earl of Ravensworth and Baron Eslington. His only other book of poems was issued in 1877, the year before he died at Ravensworth Castle. He was buried at Lamesley. The Wizard of the North is dedicated to Scott’s daughters, Charlotte Sophia Lockhart and Anne Scott; the proceeds were to help fund the Scott memorial in Edinburgh. (ODNB 1 Oct 2019) SR
