Biography:
Lewis, Eli (1750-1807: Hollis)
The son of Ellis and Ruth (Wilson) Lewis, he was born in York PA. The Lewises were Quakers; nevertheless, Eli Lewis took up arms and rose to the rank of Major in the York County militia during the Revolutionary War. He married Pamela Webster in 1779 and they had five children. From 1790 to 1798 they lived in Harrisburg, where he worked as a shopkeeper and printer and started the Harrisburg Advertiser. He then founded the nearby town of Lewisberry, where he died and is buried in the Friends' Burial Ground. (ancestry.com 13 Nov. 2019; lewisberryborough.org 13 Nov. 2019)
