Author: Lewis, Asahel Hooker

Biography:

LEWIS, Asahel Hooker (1810-62: Hollis)

pseudonym Ludovicus

Hooker's only known poetical publication dates from his time at Yale, and it is the Yale Obituary Record that provides the most reliable information about him. He was born in Farmington CT to Urania (Hooker) and Elias Lewis, graduated from Yale in the Class of '33, and went on to study law in Middletown CT. Though he was called to the bar and did practise law in Ohio, where he lived from 1835 to 1861, his main work was as a newspaper editor, successively of the Cleveland Herald (Cleveland), the Ohio Star (Ravenna), and the Beacon (Akron). He was elected to the State Legislature 1847-8. His final move was to the Missouri Democrat of St Louis MO, where he died. Lewis was married twice--to Jenette Keene in 1843 and to Jane Platt in 1848--and left three children. (ancestry.com; Yale Obituary Record 13 Nov. 2019) HJ
