Biography:

Leland, Aaron Whitney (1787-1871: Hollis)

He was born in Peru MA, the son of a clergyman, John Leland, and his wife Hephzibah. His only known literary work, The Fatal Error, was a tragedy performed and published during his student years at Williams College. After graduating in 1808, he moved to Charleston SC where he became first a schoolteacher and then a Presbyterian minister. In 1809 he married Eliza Hibben; they had ten children. After her death, in 1859 he married Clara Blight. Leland served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Charleston and then at a church on James Island. From 1833 to 1863 (when he was suddenly disabled by a stroke), he taught at the Theological Seminary in Columbia SC as Professor of Theology and later as Professor of Sacred Rhetoric and Pastoral Theology. He died and is buried in Columbia.
