Biography:
LEES, Thomas J. (fl 1831-1839)
There are not many traces of this pioneering author, but the preface to his first work describes him as someone with an "insatiable thirst for literature" though lacking a university degree or professional qualifications. He mentions having witnessed the execution of three pirates when he was a boy in Philadelphia in 1800, but he spent the whole of his publishing career in Wheeling VA (now WV), where he appears to have been an instructor in the Linsly Military Institute. His last works were a poem, The Age of Humbugs (1837), and his Poetical Works (1839). HJ
