Biography:
LEE, Chauncey (1763-1842: WBIS)
The son of Rev. Jonathan Lee and his second wife, Love (Graham) Brinkerhoff, he was born in Salisbury CT. Like his father, he graduated from Yale (1784) and eventually became a clergyman. He had been in practice as a lawyer in Salisbury when he married Abigail Stanton in 1788, but shortly after their marriage he began to prepare for the ministry. He was ordained as pastor of the First Congregational Church in Sunderland VT in 1790, then moved on to Colebrook CT in 1800 and to Marlborough CT in 1828. In 1837 he resigned his final position and went to live with a daughter in Hartwick CT, where he died. He outlived three wives: Abigail Stanton (d 1805), Olive (Harrison) Spencer (d 1818), and Rebecca (Green) Haynes (d c 1840). From his first two marriages, there were six children. Besides his verses, he published many sermons and orations and, surprisingly, a manual on arithmetic. Columbia gave him an honorary DD in 1823. (Dexter; Appleton; Sprague) HJ
