Author: Ledyard, Isaac

Biography:

LEDYARD, Isaac (1754-1803: Hollis)

He was born in Groton CT to Mary (Billings) and Youngs Ledyard. With his older brother Benjamin (1753-1803), he served in the American army during the Revolutionary War. Benjamin eventually became a General and settled near Aurora NY in the town that is now named Ledyard in his honour. Isaac, a doctor, is described as a "hospital purveyor" in the army records. After the war he bought a farm near Newtown, Long Island, that had been confiscated from a loyalist. He married a woman named Ann (surname possibly MacArthur), who survived him; no record has been found of children. His publications during his lifetime include an Essay on Matter (1784) and Mentor's Reply to Phocion's Letter (1784). (Heitman; ancestry.com 20 Sept. 2019) HJ
