Author: Lawrence, Jonathan

Biography:

LAWRENCE, Jonathan (1807-33: ancestry.com)

He was born and died in New York, the son of Elizabeth (Rogers) and Jonathan Lawrence. He graduated from Columbia, studied law, and was called to the bar in New York. He belonged to a literary society that included other young professionals: some of his letters written to an engineer, George Edward Hoffman, between 1827 and 1831--one of them in verse--are held in the New York Historical Society Library. The cause of his death on 26  Apr. 1833 is not known: the newspaper obituary deploring his early death describes him as "one of the brightest and purest members of society." His brother edited his poems for publication, but his Introduction contains few facts. Lawrence was buried in the Astoria Lawrence Cemetery in Queens.
