Biography:

LANDER, William (1778-1838: ancestry.co.uk)

He was almost certainly the William Lander baptised on 7 June 1778, at Anthony, Cornwall, son of William Lander and his wife Elizabeth Hobbs, who had married in 1775. Nothing is known of his education. In 1803 the Manor and Barton of Trenwith passed to him, which he soon offered for sale. At the end of Works (1804) he advertised his previous publications but no copies have been located: Cock-Hill Fete, A Pindaric OdeA Funeral Ode on the Death of John ChampionPieces on the Peace of 1801Funeral Pieces on the Deaths of Pious PeopleBritannia Triumphant, Pieces on the Late War. Since their length is also unknown and there is no confirmation of their physical existence, they are not listed in this bibliography. Original Masonic Songs (1815), listed in Bibliotheca Cornubiensis, has also not been located. He married Dorothea Brown (1784-1836) on 25 Feb. 1805 at St. Gluvias, Cornwall. They went on to have at least seven children, all born in Cornwall 1806-19. At some stage the family moved to Plymouth. His wife, Dorothea, died at Plymouth and was buried at St. Andrew’s on 10 June 1836. He died at Plymouth and was buried on 2 Dec. 1838 in the Wesleyan Methodist burial ground.
