Author: Ladd, Joseph Brown
Biography:
LADD, Joseph Brown (1764-86: DAB)
He was born in Newport RI, son of William and Sarah (Gardner) Ladd. He went to work at fourteen, first as apprentice to a tradesman (which he disliked) and then in a printing office. There he began writing satirical verses on local figures, so his father removed him. He turned to the study of medicine, was licensed in 1783, and established a successful practice in Charleston SC. Having developed a taste for writing, he also acquired a reputation as a speaker and man of letters. He was killed in a duel over a newspaper controversy. His sister Elizabeth Haskins edited his Literary Remains (1832), including a biographical memoir. (DAB; Knight) HJ
