Biography:
KIDD, Jane, formerly RHODES (1766-1846: findmypast.co.uk)
She was baptised 27 Jul. 1766 at Newcastle under Lyme, Staffs., the daughter of Robert Rhodes and his wife Jane Stringer. She married the Rev. Thornhill Kidd, a dissenting minister, on 18 Aug. 1803, with her younger sister Ellen as a witness. He later held ministries at Cleckheaton, near Leeds, and Clapton in East London, where he died on 1 Oct. 1819, aged 46. He had earlier published Sermons (1812) and Jane probably put together the manuscript of memoirs now in the University of Sheffield Library (MS 102). Encouraged and influenced by James Montgomery (q.v.) she published Poems and Hymns 1827) at Sheffield, assigning the proceeds to the Missionary Schools of the Moravians. In 1845 John Holland, aware that she was still alive, reprinted two interesting poems, "Expressions of the Heart" and "Poetry" but none of the 83 hymns, several of which are quite accomplished. She died on 22 July 1846, in Hull.
