Biography:

Kennicott, James H. (c. 1810-38: ancestry.com)

Most of the records of Kennicott's life have to do with his one play, Irma. He was a native of New Orleans working as a schoolmaster in New York when he entered a competition for new drama sponsored by James H. Caldwell, a theatrical impresario who managed the American Theatre in New Orleans. Kennicott won $300; his tragedy was staged with a popular actress in the starring role and was published in New York. He is said to have died "in Texas, of the prevailing sickness" (Berg).
