Biography:

KENNICOTT, Benjamin (1787-1866: ancestry.com)

Three Benjamin Kennicotts, all related and all of them Church of England clergymen, are sometimes confused with one another. The only one who became famous was a Hebrew scholar (1718-83) who graduated from Wadham College Oxford. His nephew (1754-1842), the vicar of Woodhorn, Northants., graduated from Christ Church. And his son (1789?-1866), born in Woodhorn, graduated from Oriel. The last of these, author of England Be Grateful, was the son of Benjamin Kennicott (1754-1842) and his first wife Ann Dutton, whom he had married in 1780. Having graduated from Oriel in 1809 and taken orders in 1811, their son first became curate of Houghton-le-spring and then in 1816 Perpetual Curate of Monkwearmouth, County Durham, where he spent the rest of his life. He too was twice married: first to Mary Ann Horn, in 1817, then in 1840 to Maria Simpson. There was at least one son, Benjamin Centum Kennicott, who also entered the church. Besides the one poem, he published a few volumes of sermons. He died in Monkwearmouth and is buried there.
