Author: Kennedy, James

Biography:

Kennedy, James (c. 1793-1827: ODNB)

Little is known about his early life and the suggested birth year in the ODNB seems early given the contents of his book. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and became an army hospital assistant in 1814 and an assistant staff surgeon in 1815. He married a woman named Hannah Sarah; her surname may have been Hope and they married in 1819. Kennedy was posted to the Mediterranean and in 1823 he met Lord Byron at Cephalonia. Their meeting led to discussions about religion, and Kennedy later wrote his recollections of these; they were published posthumously with some associated correspondence as Conversations on Religion with Lord Byron and Others, Held in Cephalonia (1830). Kennedy returned to England in 1826 and, after some time in Ireland, was posted to Kingston, Jamaica, where he died of yellow fever. (ODNB 4 May 2020)
