Biography:
KEMP, James (1772-1822: ancestry.com)
His poem Northernhay. . . addressed to Solitude (1808) celebrates a beauty spot, Northernhay Gardens in Exeter, where he had been born in 1772 and baptised on 31 Dec. He was the son of John and Mary (Stokes) Kemp and brother of the musician Joseph Kemp (1778-1824). At some point he moved to Cornwall, where he married Martha Perkin at St. Uny, Redruth, on 23 Sept. 1815--and where he died at the age of 50, of causes unknown, and was buried on 6 Oct. 1822. In a very short notice, the Critical Review had praised the quality of paper of the poem but disparaged the verse. There are no other publications attributed to Kemp.
