Author: Kelly, John

Biography:

KELLY, John (fl 1785-1814)

An Irish organ-builder, he settled in London in 1785 with business premises in the Exeter Change in the Strand. In 1790 he went into partnership with Benjamin Flight as "Flight and Kelly," but Flight died in 1802 and his son Benjamin (1764/5-1846) established an even more successful business with other partners. Nothing more is known of Kelly and no further writings have come to light. A reviewer in the British Critic described Elements of Music as "an attempt to versify the first half of Hook's Lessons." (W. H. Grattan Flood, "Irish Organ-Builders from the Eighth to the Close of the Eighteenth Century," Journal of the Royal Society of Antiquaries of Ireland 40:3 [1910] 229-34; British Critic 2 [1814] 434-5)
