Author: Joynes, Lucy

Biography:

JOYNES, Lucy (1782-1851: Edlin-White)

She was baptised on 25 Nov. 1782 at St. Mary’s, Nottingham, the daughter of William Joynes and his wife Mary. In 1799 the family moved to Gillyflower Hill where she opened a "Ladies School" in 1818. Around 1827, the school moved to Castle Gate where she ran it in partnership with a Miss Lees until her retirement in 1850. She published Occasional and Miscellaneous Poems (1820) but was better known for her Historical Chart of the Borough of Nottingham (1844). Among several titles intended for young children, her Original Poetry for Infant and Juvenile Minds (6th edn. 1838) went through a number of editions but was probably printed for local use in small numbers; few copies, particularly of the early editions, survive. She died 25 Apr. 1851, aged 68, leaving the remaining rents on her leasehold house to the seven children of her brother Samuel.
