JONES, Timothy (1796-1832: findagrave.com)

The 1821 volume Scripture Melodies; by a Clergyman is usually, but incorrectly, attributed to the Rev. Thomas Jones. The book’s actual author, the Rev. Timothy Jones, was born in in Brecon, Wales in 1796 He was the second son of the Rev. John Jones, of Jesus College, Oxford, vicar of Llanspyddid, Breconshire. He was ordained without a university degree in 1819. In June 1820, he was admitted sizar to St John’s College, Cambridge, as a “Ten-Year Man,” that is, as a mature student. Also in that year he was appointed stipendiary curate of St Swithun church, Leonard Stanley, Gloucestershire. The living’s perpetual curate was his non-resident elder brother, the Rev. John Price Jones (1793-1857). His younger brother, David (b 1798), was vicar of St Swithin from about 1848 to his death in 1878. The poet died, unmarried, at Leonard Stanley on 19 Dec. 1832 and was buried in St Swithun churchyard on 27 Dec. (findagrave.com 21 Dec. 2023; ACAD; Cheltenham Chronicle, 3 Jan. 1833) JC
