Biography:

Johnson, George M. (1792-1837: ancestry.co.uk)

George Macness Johnson was the son of George Johnson of Shinfield, near Reading, Berkshire. Neither his baptism nor the date of his parents’ marriage can be established with any certainty: the Oxford entrance register indicates 1794 but his death certificate, monumental inscription, and newspaper reports indicate 1792. He was educated at St. Alban Hall, Oxford (matric. 1817, aged 23 [sic]) but does not appear to have proceeded to a degree (although his monumental inscription records him as MA).  He was ordained deacon in 1818 and priest in 1820. He was Stipendiary Curate at Shalbourne, Berkshire, in 1819 before becoming Curate of St. Nicholas, Warwick. Around 1825 he became Curate of Pillerton and Assistant Minister at Kineton, Warwickshire, posts he held until his death. In 1833, a magistrate and a small group of parishioners tried to have him removed for poor performance and feared he would become a burden on the parish, but they failed. He married Sarah Baly on 5 Jan. 1824 at St. Mary, Warwick. They had two sons and two daughters. He died on 25 Sept. 1837, aged 45 (sic), after a long illness and was buried on 3 Oct. at Kineton. His widow, left with four children between the ages of seven and twelve, received £20 in assistance from the Charity for the Relief of Clergymen’s Widows and Orphans. Besides the work listed here, he published Sermons (1826), which he had announced earlier as A Series of Practical Discourses. (ancestry.co.uk 11 May 2022; findmypast.co.uk 11 May 2022; CCEd 11 May 2022; Birmingham Chronicle 8 Jan. 1824; Northampton Mercury 7 Oct. 1837; Warwick and Warwickshire Advertiser 12 Feb. 1825, 9 Dec. 1826; Worcestershire Chronicle 8 Nov. 1838; Warwickshire Monumental Inscriptions, midland-ancestors.shop) AA
