Biography:

JESTON, Humphrey (1762-1839: ancestry.co.uk)

He was baptised on 22 Aug. 1762, at St. Cybi, Holyhead, Anglesey, the son of Thomas Jeston (1730-1821), formerly a Stourbridge glassmaker, and his wife Jane (maiden name unknown). A daughter, Elizabeth (1766-1818), was also baptised in the same church. His father and unmarried sister later came to live with him at Avon Dassett rectory where they both died. He was educated at Magdalen Hall, Oxford (matric. 1781, BA 1785, MA 1788), at the expense of Robert Green (for reasons unknown) who later gave him the advowson of Avon Dassett, Warwickshire.  He was ordained deacon in 1784 and priest in 1787. He was briefly curate at Wadhurst, Sussex, Lasham, and Shalden (both Hants.) before securing the curacy of Henley on Thames in 1790 and the Rectorship of Avon Dassett in 1803. He was also Master of Odiham Grammar School 1787-9 and Master of the Royal Grammar School at Henley on Thames from 1790. He married Ann Playsted (1768-1804) on 15 June 1786 at St. James, Piccadilly, and with her had ten children. He married her sister Charity Playsted (1778-1863) on 14 Dec. 1809 at St. James, Paddington. They had a daughter.
