Author: James V, King of Scotland

Biography:

JAMES V, KING OF SCOTLAND (1512-42: ODNB)

He was born on 10 Apr. 1512 at Linlithgow Palace, West Lothian, the son of James IV and his wife Margaret, the daughter of Henry VII of England. Although James was not the eldest of his siblings, he was the only one to survive infancy and he succeeded his father as king when James IV was killed at Flodden in 1513. His mother assumed a role as regent. James seems not to have been particularly well educated but he is known to have written poetry—encouraged by David Lindsay, q.v.—and he was a keen musician. He married Madeleine de Valois in 1537 but she died after only a few months and on 17 June 1538 James married Mary of Guise. Their two sons died in infancy but a daughter, born on 8 Dec. 1542, survived. After the death of James V on 14 Dec., she was crowned Mary, Queen of Scots. John Callander, who prepared the edition listed here of poems traditionally attributed to James V, was born on 11 Sept. 1722 to James Callander of Craigforth, Stirlingshire, and his wife Catherine, the daughter of Sir Kenneth Mackenzie. John Callander was called to the Scottish bar but never practised, preferring historical research. He married Mary Livingston on 26 Nov. 1743; they had seventeen children. He became a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in Scotland in 1781. His Two Ancient Scottish Poems includes notes for readers unfamiliar with the Scottish language. Callander died at Craigforth on 14 Sept. 1789. (ODNB 16 Jan. 2025; ancestry.co.uk 16 Jan. 2025) SR
