IVANHOY, D. (fl 1832)

This name has not been found in genealogical records and may be a pseudonym. The poem celebrates the opening of the Horn Hill tunnel north of Beaminster, Dorset. Giles Russell, a solicitor in Beaminster, was instrumental in planning and financing the building of the tunnel which, at the time, was regarded as an engineering marvel. Construction began in Aug. 1831 and the tunnel officially opened on 29 June 1832. No first edition of Lines Written on Opening the Tunnel has been located. (GM July 1832, 74) SR
