Author: Isaacson, Jacob
Biography:
ISAACSON, Jacob (fl 1772)
The name may be a pseudonym but it is retained here in the absence of any confirmation. The Choice purports to be a harmless parody of Handel’s 1751 The Choice of Hercules, which was performed in Dublin in June 1771. However, the author also had other, more serious, targets in his sights: the poem takes aim at contemporary Irish politics, the Lord Lieutenant, and various aspects of Dublin society including the case of Mary Walker who in the 1750s perpetrated a hoax in the city. The introduction is dated Sept. 1771 from Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny in Ireland, but no records for a Jacob Isaacson have been located. SR
