Biography:
ISAACS, Mrs. Sarah, later Harrison (1776-1858: ancestry.co.uk)
Mrs. Isaacs was the author of six novels published by William Lane and by C. Chapple in London from 1801 to 1820. The work listed in this bibliography, The Wanderings of Fancy, includes tales and some verse. Helpfully, it also includes a six-page subscription list which offers several clues to her identity. Almost certainly she was born Sarah Harrison in Silsoe, Bedfordshire, to William and Sarah Harrison and baptised on 20 Mar. 1776. When she married Thomas Isaacs at St. George’s, Hanover Square, London, on 16 Nov. 1799 her place of residence was given as West Ham, Essex. She and Thomas had one child, William Harrison Isaacs, who was born on 13 Apr. 1803. It is not known when Thomas Isaacs died but on 4 Aug. 1820 at St. Mary’s, Lambeth, she married Lewis Hamilton (b 1773 in Daventry, Northamptonshire), perhaps a cousin. He had subscribed to Wanderings of Fancy. The marriage record identifies Sarah Isaacs as a widow living in Clapham. The 1841 Census shows them living in Daventry where in Aug. 1850 Lewis died. His will left property to Sarah and to various nephews and other relations. The 1851 Census shows Sarah living at 135 Sheaf Street in Daventry with two granddaughters—Louisa and Mary Isaacs. Sarah is identified as a “gentlewoman.” She died in Daventry of dysentery on 26 Jan. 1858 and was buried there on 2 Feb. Although she had a successful career publishing as Mrs. Isaacs during her first marriage, there is no evidence that she published anything after her marriage to Lewis Harrison.
