Author: Hyde, Nancy Maria

Biography:

HYDE, Nancy Maria (1792-1816: WBIS)

She was born in Norwich CT, the youngest child of Elisha and Ann (Hallam) Hyde. A precocious and dedicated student, she left school at fourteen but continued her education at home. In 1811, she and her friend Lydia Huntley--later famous as Mrs. Sigourney (q.v.)--opened a school in Norwich. When Hyde became ill in 1814, the Norwich school was closed and "Miss Huntley's School" reopened in Hartford CT. Lydia Huntley edited the posthumous collection of Hyde's poems and journals, with a "sketch" of her life, as a tribute to her friend and a source of financial support for her widowed mother: there is a long list of subscribers.
