Author: Hutton, J.

Biography:

HUTTON, J. (fl 1811?)

There is only one book--a mystery and possibly a red herring. The title-page identifies the author as "Pastor of the Church of Christ in Broughton, Eng." and the preface is dated by "the author" from "Albany NY." There are no other editions. There was a Moravian Church founded in the seventeenth century in Broughton in the Lake District (present-day Cumbria), but no record of a pastor named Hutton has come to light. James Hutton (1715-95) was a leader of the Moravian Church in England in the eighteenth century but he was not alive in 1811 to sign a preface and he never travelled to America. He had no children who lived beyond infancy. He did publish important collections of hymns but they do not appear to match the hymns in J. Hutton's Albany collection. HJ
