Biography:
HUNT, John Higgs (1780-1859: WBIS)
The son of Joseph and Martha Hunt of Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, he graduated from Trinity College Cambridge in 1801 and was made a Fellow of the College in 1803. From 1805 to 1807 he was the proprietor and editor of the Critical Review, an influential early supporter of Byron's poetry. In 1807 he resigned his fellowship to marry Maria Manesty; the couple had two children. Hunt was ordained in 1815 and served as vicar of Weedon Bec, Northamptonshire, from 1823 until his death. His translation of Tasso (1818) was well received but he published nothing else. (ODNB 10 May 2019)
