Biography:
HULL, John Dawson (1801-86: ancestry.co.uk)
He was the eldest child of Edward Hull and his wife Elizabeth Dawson and was born at Donaghadee, Co. Down. His father’s family came from England but had been in Ireland for several generations. Nothing is known about his education but he was ordained in 1825 and served as curate at Bangor, Co. Down. In 1828 in Dublin he married Alicia Dawson Benson, possibly a cousin. They had five daughters and three sons but the youngest boy drowned at Huntly Lodge, Aberdeenshire, at the age of three. The family was in Huntly from 1841 when Hull served as chaplain to the Duchess of Gordon and minister to the Scottish Episcopal Church there. In 1845 he was found guilty of some irregularities in the Church and removed from his position. At least two publications resulted from this incident: Letter to the Bishop of Exeter and A Short Address to the Members of the Scottish Episcopal Church Residing in Huntly (both 1845). No information on his whereabouts has been found for the period 1845-59 but he became Vicar of Wickhambrook, Suffolk, in 1859. He died on 31 Dec. 1886 at Wickhambrook, predeceased by his wife and leaving an estate of £2950. His other publications include sermons, hymns, and poems. A collection of his poems, edited by the Rev. R. Wilton, was published in 1889.
