Hughs, Mary, formerly Robson (fl 1811-67)

Her birthdate is not known but she was born in Newcastle upon Tyne and was buried in Doylestown PA in 1867. She began as a Darton writer for children in 1811, often using the pen-name "Aunt Mary." She married a Scot, Thomas Hughs, in 1818 and emigrated with him to Philadelphia, where she started a school for young ladies. He was also involved in education. In Philadelphia he edited and published schoolbooks that are included in this bibliography: The Universal Class-book (1830), The American Popular Reader (1831), and The New American Speaker (1831). Mary Hughs was a hardworking and very successful writer, mainly of juvenile fiction; some of her books are still in print today. The couple retired to a farm near Doylestown; he died in 1877.
