Biography:

HOWE, Solomon (1750-1835: Hollis)

Farmer, musician, Baptist minister, bookseller and printer, Howe was the son of Jedediah and Abigail (Warren) Howe. Born in Westboro MA, he graduated from Dartmouth in 1778 and in the same year married Mary Holmes. They appear to have had at least two children. A Baptist convert, he settled at first in Greenwich MA where he farmed and ran a printing press. The family later moved to Enfield and finally, in 1834, to New Salem MA. Most of his publications are hymns or otherwise church-related, but he also published broadsides on secular topics including current events (a local murder; the death of Washington) and popular subjects.
