Biography:

HORNBY, Edward Thomas Stanley (1782-1825: ancestry.co.uk)

He was born on 30 Mar. 1782 and baptised on 24 Apr., the fourth son of the Rev. Geoffrey Hornby (1750-1812) of Winwick, near Warrington,  Lancs., and his wife Lucy Smith Stanley (1750-1833), sister of the Earl of Derby, who had married in 1772. His father had been educated at Eton and Trinity College Cambridge and was then presented to the living of Winwick by the 12th Earl of Derby, his brother-in-law. He was educated at Eton and Brasenose College Oxford, (matric. 1800, BA 1804, MA 1809), obtained a Fellowship at All Souls (1804-25), and entered the church. He died at Orford Hall, Lancashire, on 20 Mar. 1825 from asthma or consumption. He never married. He made provision in his for his “four dear sisters” Georgiana, Fanny, Louisa, and Henrietta. Another sister, Charlotte, had married the 13th Earl of Derby in 1798 but had died in 1817. His elder brother Edmund (1773-1857) became an MP and High Sheriff of Lancashire; his younger brother Sir Phipps (1785-1867) rose to the rank of admiral in the navy.
