Biography:

HOPKIRK, John Glassford (c 1789-1859: ancestry.co.uk)

He was likely born at Dalbert, Glasgow; his parents were James Hopkirk and Christian (Glassford) Hopkirk. After studying at the University of Glasgow, he moved to Edinburgh and was a Writer to the Signet (Scottish solicitor). He married Jessie Hamilton (c 1796-1824) at Stirling in 1815; of their six children, five predeceased their father. His only other publication is An Account of the Insurrection in St Domingo (1833). He died at Edinburgh and is buried in Greyfriars cemetery. His older brother, Thomas Hopkirk, was a botanist and has an entry in the ODNB. (ancestry.co.uk 27 Feb. 2019)
