Although no birth record has been located, he was likely born at Dalbert, Glasgow, in 1789; his parents were James Hopkirk and Christian (Glassford) Hopkirk who had married in Glasgow on 28 Mar. 1784. He was their sixth child and second son. After studying at the University of Glasgow, he moved to Edinburgh and was a Writer to the Signet (Scottish solicitor). He married Jessie Hamilton (d 1824) at Stirling on 12 Sept. 1815; of their six children, five predeceased their father. His only other publication is An Account of the Insurrection in St Domingo (1833). The 1851 Census shows them living in a house on Great King Street, Edinburgh with two of Jessie's sisters and three servants. He died at Edinburgh on 2 Aug. 1859 and is buried in Greyfriars cemetery with his wife and five of their children. His elder brother, Thomas Hopkirk, was a botanist and has an entry in the ODNB.
