Author: Holmes, Ann

Biography:

HOLMES, Ann (fl 1800)

Despite the long list of contents beginning with the “epic poem” about Adam and Eve, Holmes’s collection is short, badly printed, and amateurish. The signed preface apologises for the author’s lack of a liberal education but thanks her friends and “several principal People in our Neighbourhood” for their encouragement. The neighbourhood was Wensleydale, Yorkshire. No plausible parish records have been found. This obscure Ann Holmes is not to be confused with the novelist who led a life full of scandal and sensation, Ann Holmes of Hertfordshire (c. 1786-1831), best known as the unfaithful wife of Hugh Doherty.
