Biography:

HOLLAND, Thomas Agar (1803-88: ODNB)

He was born on 16 Jan. 1803 at Poynings, near Steyning, Sussex, the eldest son of the Rector, Rev. Samuel Holland (1772-1857), and his wife Frances Erskine (1771-1859), daughter of Thomas Erskine (1750-1823), lord chancellor, who had married on 20 Jan. 1802 at St. Giles, Holborn, London. He was educated at Westminster (1816-18) and spent some time at Edinburgh (1820-21) before proceeding to Worcester College, Oxford (Matric. 1821, BA 1825, MA 1828).  He entered the Established Church and was ordained priest in 1827. He was Vicar of Oving, near Chichester, 1827-38, and Rector of Greatham, Hants., 1838-46, before succeeding his father as Rector of Poynings, Sussex, 1846-1888. He married Madalena Stewart (1806-96) on 31 Aug. 1831, at St. Nicholas, Brighton. They had at least nine children, all of whom survived into adulthood. He died on 18 Oct. 1888 at the Rectory, Poynings, of senile decay and heart failure, leaving an estate of just over £1,100. After his death, his wife moved to Brighton where she died in 1896.
