Biography:

HOLLAND, Joseph (fl 1806)

No reliable information has been found beyond the internal evidence in Holland’s only known publication of 1806, published at Croydon in Surrey, which offers a supplement to Robert Bloomfield’s (q.v.) immensely popular Farmer’s Boy together with a moral tale, “Horatio and Emma,” and a few other shorter poems. The “Epitaph on Eliza” may have been written for the mother of the poet, who was himself a farm labourer. Since Bloomfield had not included any account of hay-making because hay-making was not one of the tasks he had experienced at first hand, Holland wrote one.
