HOLFORD, Margaret, formerly WRENCH (1759-1834: ancestry.com)

She was baptised on 19 Jan. 1759 at Holy Trinity, Chester, Cheshire, the daughter of Ann (Chamberlain) and William Wrench, who had married in Chester on 24 Nov. 1757. Her schooling is not recorded. On 22 June 1777 at St. Michael’s Church, Chester, she married Allen Holford of Davenham Hall, Davenham, Cheshire (not Daventry, Northants.), and they had four daughters, the eldest also a writer, Margaret Holford the younger (q.v.). Her husband died in 1788 and was buried in Chester Cathedral. Mrs. Holford had already begun her career as a writer with two novels, Fanny (1785) and Selima (1786). A third, First Impressions, appeared in 1801. She also wrote two comedies (1798, 1814), at least one of which was performed as well as published. She lived at Chester with an unmarried daughter until her death on 8 Nov. 1834 and was buried on 17 Nov. in the churchyard of St. John the Baptist, Chester.
