HOARE, Charles James (1781-1865: ODNB)
The third son of a banker and an heiress, Charles James Hoare was born in London to Lydia Henrietta (Malortie) and Henry Hoare on 14 Jul. 1781. After a private education he entered St. John’s College, Cambridge (matric. 1802, BA 1803, MA 1806, Fellow 1806), where he won the Seatonian Prize for his only published poem. He was ordained priest in 1806 and was presented to the living of Blandford Forum, Dorset, by the Dean and Chapter of Winchester in 1807; later in life he became archdeacon of Winchester (1829) and canon residentiary at the Cathedral (1831). From 1847 to 1860, when failing health led him to resign the post, he was archdeacon of Surrey. Meantime, on 4 Jul. 1811 he married Jane Isabella Holden, with whom he had seven children. In Mar. 1821 they moved to take up the family living of Godstone, Surrey, which he held until his death in 1865. Hoare’s other publications were all in the service of his profession: sermons, lectures, and pamphlets on matters of doctrine or policy. He died at Godstone vicarage on 15 Jan. 1865 and was buried in the churchyard on 21 Jan. His estate was valued at under £30,000. (ODNB 23 Aug. 2022; ACAD; John Bull 21 Jan. 1865) HJ
