Biography:

Hine, Benjamin (c 1763-c 1840: ancestry.com)

Records are scant, but the US Pension Roll of 1835 includes a Connecticut man of this name born in 1763 who served as a private in the Connecticut militia and afterwards settled in Greene County NY. The Preface to Hine's one volume of verse reveals that he was "without education" except such as had been available in the "common schools" of over fifty years before; that in 1835 he considered himself to be of "advanced age"; and that he was a childless bachelor, but with a large circle of family and friends. Hine had spent over forty years, by his own account, carving a farm out of  "wilderness" in the vicinity of Cairo, Greene County NY, from where the Preface is dated. (ancestry.com 25 Mar. 2019)
