Biography:

HILL, George (1796-1861: WBIS)

He was born in Guilford CT, graduated from Yale in 1816, and after working for the government in Washington DC joined the navy as a teacher of mathematics in 1827. This job took him to the Mediterranean, but he resigned in 1831 to take on a position as Librarian in the State Department. In 1839 he was appointed US Consul for the southern part of Asia Minor; before long, ill health obliged him to resign and return to Washington. In 1855 he retired to Guilford. He does not appear to have married: the 1860 census records him living as a gentleman with one servant. Fitz-Greene Halleck (q.v.) was a Guilford friend. The Ruins of Athens appeared in revised, enlarged editions in 1839 and 1870 (the last under the alternative title Titania's Banquet). (Appleton; ancestry.com 16 Mar. 2019) HJ
