HIGGIN, John (1789?-1827: findagrave.com)
According to the prefatory note to his Poems, Higgin was a merchant with business interests in Brazil who travelled frequently and wrote most of his poetry at sea. He died in a shipwreck just off Holyhead on 1 Jan. 1827, aged 38, but had left his collection of verses with a friend for posthumous publication. His parents were most probably John Higgin, a grocer, and his wife Mary Bockell, who had married on 1 Feb. 1789 at St. John’s, Liverpool. Higgin was buried at the Liverpool Necropolis, Everton. On 2 Mar. 1825 he had married Eleanor Lane at St. Lawrence, Canon Pyon, Herefordshire. There had been no children, and Eleanor Higgin of 4 South Hunter St., Liverpool, was sole executrix of the will.
