Author: Heath, James

Biography:

HEATH, James (fl 1818)

The author of Clifton Chapel Hill seems to have been based in Oxfordshire and to have been unrelated to James Heath (1757-1834) the engraver, who was a Londoner born and bred. His poem—his only published work--was advertised in OUCH which also, over the years, carried other notices about local residents of the same name. It is possible that he belonged either to a farming family at Ewelme or to the one that owned an inn at Northleach, but no convincing match has been found so far. A Roman Catholic James Heath, baptised and married at Stonor, is also an unlikely candidate since the Chapel on Clifton Hill was a Methodist one erected in 1815.
