Author: Hazard, Joseph

Biography:

HAZARD, Joseph (1757-1817: Hollis)

Information is scarce. One of his poems is addressed to his mother Elizabeth Hazard. His Juvenile Poems (1789) were for the most part composed when he was about 20, according to the Preface. He is described as a New York writer in contemporary sources, but they might be referring to the place of publication or to the State rather than the City. It seems quite likely that he was the Joseph Hazard ordained as pastor of the Presbyterian Church in Southold on Long Island in 1797: the ordination sermon was preached by Samuel Buell (q.v.).
