Author: Haynes, James
Biography:
Haynes, James (1788-1851: WBIS)
O’Donoghue identifies him as a native of Tipperary. He attended Trinity College Dublin (1807-8) but left without taking a degree, moving to London where he became a journalist and dramatist. Few other biographical details are known. Conscience is dedicated to his “best friend,” James Perry, editor of the liberal Morning Chronicle. The Advertisement to Durazzo states that the author withdrew it from both Covent Garden and Drury Lane theatres “rather than descend to the solicitations…which Managers would impose upon literary persons.” Haynes’s most successful play was his 1840 Mary Stuart which ran to three editions; it is dedicated to William Macready who prepared the play for the stage and acted the role of Ruthven in the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane production.
