Biography:
Hayes, John (1782?-1815: Dickinson Archives)
His title-page identifies him as having a bachelor's degree and being employed as Professor of Languages at Dickinson College in Carlisle PA. He was himself a graduate of the College, tutored there from 1805 to 1807, then took up the post of professor of Latin and Greek. The College Archives provide further information. He married Sarah McColl in 1805; they had four children. In 1809 he was licensed by the Carlisle Presbytery and went as minister to the Monaghan Presbyterian Church in Dillsburg PA. (He may also have been responsible for a congregation in Silver Spring.) Five years later, in failing health, he retired to Cumberland MD, where he died in September 1815.
