Author: Hawley, William Fitz
Biography:
Hawley, William Fitz (1804?-1855: DCB)
He was born in Lower Canada (Quebec), probably in La Prairie, where he died. He contributed to periodicals and is said to have collected materials--and subscriptions--for a history of the Canadas, but his contributions have been hard to confirm and his materials were destroyed by fire. (MacDonald however provides a substantial bibliography of his uncollected contributions to Canadian newspapers.) The nature of his employment is also uncertain, though at the time of his death he was Registrar of a district in the County of Huntingdon. He acknowledged the influence of Campbell, Moore, Byron, and Ossian on his own work but attempted to give his work a new-world stamp as well.
