HAVEN, Samuel (1727-1806: ancestry.com)

Born in Framingham MA on 4 Aug. 1727, he was the son of Mehitable and Joseph Haven. After graduating from Harvard in 1749, he was ordained as pastor of the First Church in Portsmouth MA in 1752. He published many sermons and occasional discourses 1760-1800, and was known especially for his funeral sermons. He was honoured with a DD by Edinburgh in 1770 and by Dartmouth in 1773. In 1753 he married Mehetabel Appleton and they had by some reports eleven children. After her death in 1777 he married Margaret Marshall, a widow, in 1778, and they had six more. Reports of the number of children vary--there may have been only eight and three respectively--but twelve children are named on his gravestone. He died at Portsmouth on 3 Mar. 1806 and was buried there. (ancestry.com 9 Sept. 2025; Appleton) HJ
