Biography:
Harwood, John Edmund (1771-1809: WBIS)
He was born in England, where he was given a liberal education and went on to study law. In 1793 he travelled to the US as part of a theatrical company engaged to perform in Philadelphia. He married a Miss Bache, a grand-daughter of Benjamin Franklin, and set up as a bookseller. In 1803, after his business failed, he returned to the stage in New York. He died in Germantown PA. The Harwoods had at least one son, who made his name as a naval officer. (Appleton)
