He was born in England, probably the son of John and Sarah Harwood who was baptised at Norwich, Norfolk, on 11 Nov. 1770. (His poetry was later advertised in Norfolk.) He was given a liberal education and went on to study law. In 1793 he travelled to the US as part of a theatrical company engaged to perform in Philadelphia. He married Eliza Franklin Bache, a grand-daughter of Benjamin Franklin, in Philadelphia on 9 Jan. 1800 and set up as a bookseller. In 1803, after his business failed, he returned to the stage in New York. He died in Germantown PA on 21 Sept. 1809 and was buried there.
